May 18, 1944 - April 27, 2018
Funeral services for Donald Robert Lybrand, 73, of Lamesa will be held Friday, May 18, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Northside Baptist Church with Aaron Lybrand and Roy Bryd officiating. Interment will follow at Dawson County Cemetery under the direction of Branon Funeral Home.
Don passed away Friday, April 27, 2018 in Lamesa. He was born May 18, 1944 to the late H.H. (Slim) and Marie Lybrand in Lamesa.
A life-long resident of Lamesa, Don was active in baseball as a left-handed pitcher -first baseman for the Kiwanis Little League team, the Lybrand Butane Pony League team, and for the Lamesa High School Tornadoes, who played in the 1961 State tournament. He was also member of the 1961 District 3AAA Champion and defending 1960 3AAA State Championship basketball team. Don graduated high school in 1962. Even as he participated in these sports, his love for flying, which surfaced at age 16, led to his life-long profession. On June 4,1962 Don earned his pilot's license and during the next 55 years and 6 months he logged an estimated 31,475 hours of flight time. He flew Ag spray planes (mainly his Pawnee and Thrush) and many different model single and multi-engine piston and turbine powered general aviation aircraft. During his association with Johnson Flying Service and later, Don Lybrand Flying Service, he provided low level aerial application of herbicides and insecticides on various crops being grown by farmers in Dawson and surrounding Counties. Don also flew many individuals, politicians, collegiate coaches, and business owners to destinations across the United States. Don was known to provide flights on short notice for individuals to visit relatives, for doctor appointments, attend funerals, and such. His dedication and adherence to safety and flight details were well known and documented by his impeccable safety record. Don was more at home in the cockpit than in his hangar, office, or pickup.
Don is preceded in death by his parents and long-time business partner Larue Johnson. He is survived by his loving family, including his brother and wife, Bennie and Carole Lybrand of Tyler, Tx; nephews and wives Keith and Lydia Lybrand, Whitehouse, Tx. and Phillip and Jan Lybrand, Trinity, Tx; grand nieces and husbands, Kaley and Lt. Gonzales, Onalaska, Tx; grand nephews and wives Aaron and Amie Lybrand, Kingwood, Tx; Josh and Taylor Lybrand, Tyler, Tx; Kevin and Betsy Lybrand, Jacksonville, Tx. and seven great grand nephews and nieces.
